Conflicting Messages Emerge in Nancy Guthrie Case: Dead or Alive”

What was thought to be a day back to somewhat normalcy, Savannah Guthrie who is a co-anchor at NBC on the Today’s show lost her mother 64 days ago. It was said that that on the same day of Savannah’s return, TMZ received a ransom style note about Nancy Guthrie and it was believed to be from the same person who sent the first one. The note had suspicious claims that she was either dead or alive in Mexico.

Back in early February when the first note was sent by the perpetrator had a very direct claim saying, “I know where her body is… give me half a bitcoin and I’ll tell you.”, it also claimed that she had passed away. A second note came in that “I saw her alive… in the state of Sonora, Mexico.”. Obviously, these are two very conflicting claims made of the 84 year old missing mother of three to have come in. Whoever the writer is, they are saying that they did not commit the crime, they wanted half a bitcoin upfront and the other half after the arrest, they complained of being looked at as a scam, and they sent the letters to TMZ rather than directly to the family.

Neither of these notes have been verified so the FBI is looking at this as possible leads but also possible hoaxes. As of now, law enforcement is following strict guidelines to verify notes. Some of the clues in looking at note include; specific details not released to the public, has a consistent story, direct contact with law enforcement or the family, and proof like photos, videos, locations, etc. Although this person did not have a consistent story, did not have direct contact with the right people, or providing proof. Even though this person made headlines, the investigation is still being held within law enforcement and will not release notes that may hurt the case.
